Monza 0-1 Milan: Messias guides Rossoneri to victory as Berlusconi denied famous result

Milan climbed into Serie A s top four as Junior Messias secured a 1-0 win at Monza, whose owner Silvio Berlusconi failed to get one over on his old club.

Messias fired home on the turn just after the half-hour mark after Monza – who entered the game as Serie A s only unbeaten team in 2023 – twice went close in a fast start to Saturday s match.

Monza played their part in a lively affair but were unable to give Berlusconi – who bankrolled Milan to five European crowns – a result to cherish against his beloved Rossoneri.

Milan were able to claim victory without calling on Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the first time this season, with the striker again an unused substitute as they moved above Atalanta and Roma into third place.

Feels good 0-1

Greatest Champions League comebacks: Could Liverpool do the unthinkable against Real Madrid?

The only thing to be sure about with the Champions League, is that nothing s for sure.

That is at least what Liverpool fans will be telling themselves as Jurgen Klopp s men prepare to try to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Carlo Ancelotti continued his habit of terrorising Liverpool as his team staged a comeback of their own, recovering from 2-0 down at Anfield to run out 5-2 winners.

The LaLiga giants also defeated the Reds in last season s Champions League final, and so the hunger for revenge should be strong, but to come back against a team as strong as Madrid seems fanciful or so it would seem.

Perhaps the most famous comeback in the competition s history is Liverpool breaking Ancelott…

Nice sack Favre after Coupe de France upset

Nice have sacked coach Lucien Favre after exiting the Coupe de France to third-tier Le Puy Foot.

Favre returned to the Ligue 1 club for a second stint in charge in June 2022 as they invested ahead of the new season.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss had guided Nice to Champions League qualification in 2016-17, but his latest spell did not yield the same success.

Despite making a series of high-profile signings, including Aaron Ramsey, Ross Barkley and Kasper Schmeichel, Nice are down in 11th in Ligue 1.

The final straw for Favre was Saturday s cup elimination at the hands of lower-league opposition, with Nice winless since the World Cup break.

Didier Digard will take charge of Nice until further notice , with a Ligue 1 double-header against Montpe…

Lindelof and Greenwood return for Man Utd as Grealish left out by Guardiola

Victor Lindelof and Mason Greenwood were recalled to Manchester United s starting line-up for Saturday s Premier League showdown with Manchester City.

Centre-back Lindelof missed Tuesday s 2-2 Champions League draw with Atalanta with a knock sustained in training and was considered doubtful for the Manchester derby.

However, the Sweden international returned for the clash at Old Trafford in place of Raphael Varane, who was injured in that midweek European match and faces a month out.

Lindelof started in a back three alongside Eric Bailly – making just a third start of the season – and Harry Maguire, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sticking to a 3-5-2 system employed in his side s last two games.

Unlike those previous two matches, there was a place in the …

European Under-21 Championship: Germany win third title as Nmecha strike sees off Portugal

Lukas Nmecha scored the trophy-winning goal as Germany beat Portugal 1-0 in the European Under-21 Championship final.

The Manchester City striker, who spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht, scored early in the second half to ensure Germany claimed the trophy for the third time, following 2009 and 2017 triumphs.

It made Nmecha the outright top scorer in the tournament with four goals.

Portugal, who carved out just one shot on target in Ljubljana, have now finished as runners-up in the competition on three occasions.

THAT S IT!!!!

Arsenal have ´long way´ in top four race, insists Arteta despite rich run of form

Arsenal must not take anything for granted in their bid to qualify for the Champions League, according to Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners face Watford this weekend and sit sixth in the table, but with three games in hand over both Manchester United and West Ham.

Coupled with a more favourable run-in, on paper at least, Arsenal are arguably the favourites to seal a top-four berth come the end of the season.

However, Arteta has stressed his team will take it step-by-step.

I think it s positive because that s where we want to be playing, Arteta told his pre-match press conference on Friday. The reality is we are not fourth but sixth still.

We have to win those games. We know what we have to do. There s a long way to go and the only aim is to win agai…

Euro 2016 Draw Preview: Low relaxed over Germany´s opponents

Germany coach Joachim Low says his world champions do not fear any of their potential opponents at Euro 2016 ahead of Saturday s draw in Paris.

Hosts France and 23 qualifiers will find out their group rivals for the competition this weekend, with Germany among those heavily fancied to be as frontrunners.

Semi-finalists at Euro 2012, Germany won the World Cup in Brazil last year and are among the top seeds along with France, European champions Spain, England, Portugal and Belgium.

Germany s team manager Oliver Bierhoff will help conduct the draw, alongside the likes of Ruud Gullit, Bixente Lizarazu, Vicente del Bosque, Antonin Panenka and David Trezeguet. And Low says he has no special requests for Bierhoff in terms of who they draw.

Oliver did we…

Denmark 1-1 England: Kane strike cancelled out in underwhelming Three Lions display

England passed up the chance to progress to the knockout stage of Euro 2024 with a game to spare as they were pegged back to a 1-1 draw by Denmark in Frankfurt.

Harry Kane s goal in the 18th minute had eased the early Three Lions nerves, only for Morten Hjulmand to take aim from distance and fire beyond Jordan Pickford.

Yet bar the move for Kane s opener, England s performance was deeply lacklustre, and Gareth Southgate may well face scrutiny, even though the Three Lions remain in pole position in Group C.

Denmark, who looked the more likely to win it in the second half, sit second, ahead of Slovenia and Serbia, who drew in Thursday s earlier match.

There were calls for concern early on in the contest as Kyle Walker was the first to succumb to a choppy …

Derek McInnes thrilled to see Kilmarnock edge closer to European football

Derek McInnes was thrilled after his Kilmarnock side edged closer to securing European football with a confident victory over St Johnstone.

Killie deservedly took the lead midway through the first half when Joe Wright turned home Liam Polworth’s pin-point delivery – and the visitors were denied on multiple occasions to extend their advantage by the heroics of Dimitar Mitov.

The game was settled with nine minutes remaining after Marley Watkins tapped home his 13th goal of the season.

Kilmarnock have extended their advantage in fourth place to eight points, with just five games remaining.

“I thought first half we were very good,” McInnes said.

“Coming away from home, we tried to impose ourselves. We spoke throughout the week about the impo…

The Numbers Game: PSG threatening to implode but Marseille´s Classique record is bleak

This might be the perfect time to play Paris Saint-Germain, or it could be the worst possible time to face them.

It s been a chaotic week for the Ligue 1 champions, with rumours of in-fighting, betrayal, and possible walkouts.

Kylian Mbappe apparently wants out, and that in turn led to speculation about the possibility of football consultant Luis Campos and head coach Christophe Galtier departing as well.

Everyone remains for the time being and they must all now turn their attention to Sunday s game, Le Classique.

Victory for Marseille will move them level on 26 points with PSG – victory for the Parisians at the Parc des Princes will likely have many already declaring them champions again even after just 11 games.

A rival emerging?
